episode 2 - Roel Vivit

Episode 2, featuring Roel Vivit who I have had the good fortune to know for over 15 years.

Roel has been an educational leader in Chicago, creating spaces for student development despite the challenges created by the injustices of the city.  Students who know Roel remember how much he knows them, cares about them and how much his caring and nurturing spirit helped them become more than they thought possible. For over two decades, Roel has been working to develop new opportunities for students — as a teacher in Chicago schools, as a consultant with the Chicago Area Writing Project, as a director at education non-profits and local foundations — and as a cofounder (alongside Michelle Navarre and Tracey Kwok) of one of the best schools in the world, Polaris Charter Academy.

To know Roel is to love him.  From his kind reception every time you talk with him to his fantastic dance moves, from his incredible presence to his magical way of helping you to find a better and best version of yourself, Roel is a gift to those around him.

In his career, Roel has been the Head of School at Park Day School in Oakland, CA, a director for the Midwest team at education non-profit, EL Education and currently serves as director of education at the Steans Family Foundation serving the North Lawndale community — a place full of beautiful families where some are facing the hardship of injustice.

He is also a recipient of the Golden Apple, a prestigious highly selective award for remarkable teachers in Chicago.

Most importantly, Roel is an exceptionally good leader in how he has taken his many many talents and skills and focused them on solving social problems particularly for students facing racial and economic injustices.  He is a good human and I was absolutely delighted to have him a guest.  This conversation will undoubtedly be full of gems and learning for all those on their own path in leadership for social good.  And with that, dive in!
