episode 4 - Matthew King
This week we feature the exceptionally good leadership of Matthew King.
Matthew is one of the co-founders of One Goal - an education non-profit focused on student post secondary college access that grew to a national organization serving 5 regions and well over 180 schools, and over tens of thousands of students.
He was the founding leader behind EPIC academy, a Chicago charter school on the south side, that he designed and launched alongside Josh Miller, Jenny Vaughn and myself — and where he guided the board and school leadership team through strategic school turnaround from Warning to Close list to the top-tier Level 1+ rating in Chicago’s Southside — at the time, EPIC then ranked in the Top 10% of district high schools in achievement growth.
Matthew is also the founder of College Principle and has traveled the country in order to advise and coach district and school leaders to improve their organizations despite inequities baked into our system.
He’s quoted as saying:
“Getting results anyway means creating the conditions that result in students owning academic achievement gains and realizing their post-secondary aspirations.”
Matthew has a BA in History from Miami University, a masters degree in curriculum & instruction from Texas A&M University, his masters degree in administration and supervision from National Louis University, and a superintendent certification from Ohio State University.
… and an army of devoted former students and staff.
Most importantly, Matthew is an exceptionally good leader in how he has taken his many many talents and skills to lead for social good… and I am delighted to have him as my guest. This conversation is full of gems and learning for all those on their own path to leadership. And with that, dive in!
