episode 5 - Shyla Kinhal

Exceptionally Good Episode 5 - Shyla Kinhal is currently the director of literacy for Evanston/Skokie School District outside of Chicago.  In her career, she has held a number of roles related to literacy and equity in education, including as a classroom teacher in NYC, as a founding teacher and Dean of Culture at a KIPP school, as a coach and curriculum designer at EL Education (an organization we both know well and where we first got to know one another), as a director for Leading Educators, a non-profit focused on teacher development, and as a senior manager at the KIPP Foundation.

She is also a former board member at Oak Park Elementary District in Oak Park, IL, near Chicago.

Shyla is known for her warm, people-led leadership, her ability to connect with all people in her orbit, her strong intellect, and deep expertise driving toward equitable literacy outcomes.

Shyla holds degrees in Spanish and Political Science from the University of Michigan as well as a master’s in teaching from Pace University.

… and Shyla has an amazing singing voice if you should ever be so lucky to hear her melodic sounds.

Oh, and she was an all-state field hockey player!

Most importantly, Shyla is an exceptionally good leader in how she has taken her many, many talents and skills to lead for social good… and I am delighted to have her as my guest.  This conversation is undoubtedly full of gems and learning for all those on their own path in leadership.  And with that, dive in!
